Upcyled fishing net from the coastal regions of Morocco, mainly Casablanca and Essaouira.
For a long time, I’ve been searching for a good alternative to kitchen sponges, as I didn’t like the fact that I had to replace them frequently and that they start smelling after a short while. To my surprise I have found the answer in an upcycled fishing net:
– Because of its airy structure, it dries much quicker than a sponge, which means fewer bacteria will grow on it, and it will not smell.
– It lasts much longer than a kitchen sponge, around 4 years.
– Most importantly, it cleans just as effectively as a sponge: the knots of the net help to remove sticky food, and against my expectations, it actually foams up nicely. In Morocco, almost every household uses old fishing nets for cleaning dishes. It is a proven concept. This net is made from so-called ghost nets: old fishing nets that have been abandoned, lost, or discarded and are a threat to marine animals. Oli and Jii, the founders of Fischnetz With Benefits, retrieve these old nets, clean them, cut them into usable sizes, and ship them to your doorstep.
