Choosing a Leica camera is not a rational decision. If you look at the data sheet, you might find cameras with more features and specs for far less. So, what is so special about this camera?" When you cannot leave any detail out anymore, you've reached perfection." There is a quote from Rick Rubin in his book "The Creative Act" that goes something like this. Leica has achieved exactly that with their cameras. The camera is stripped down to the minimum that you need.
The lens is permanently attached to the camera body, so you cannot interchange between different lenses. There is only this one option. The lens has a 1.7f aperture and a 28mm focal length. This lens is exceptional, the image quality it produces is outstanding. The same principle applies to the control buttons. You won’t find various programmed modes like for scenery, sports photography. Instead, there are only the essential controls for capturing the image. These constraints let you focus on the photography itself, not the gear and tech around it. And they make it actually possible to hand over the camera to someone unfamiliar with photography, as they are not overwhelmed by numerous options.
A Leica is rock-solid built. It will last for many years and hundred of thousands of pictures. The magnesium alloy body feels good in your hands, all buttons and knobs have a satisfying click and a sturdy feel. And you'll find joy in the smallest details: For instance, take the lens hood. It is so precisely machined that it screws without any friction and then provides a hard stop when it reaches its final position. (This is actually way more difficult to achieve than you might think)
This reduced package, executed in this high quality is what makes this camera so appealing. Not to everyone, but to someone who gets excited about an overall experience, not about a spec sheet.I chose a special version of the Leica Q, the Q-P for exact the only difference it has compared to the normal Q: the lack of the red Leica logo and the extra robust matte finish.
